Shark Fishing Information
Description
Shark fishing on the Pacific Coast is a thrill that
beckons the adventurous fly angler and pushes them to
their limits. While the Pacific Ocean is home to a
great many types of blue water sharks, we generally
target Mako Sharks & Blue Sharks.
Tackle
Rods / Reels / Line
It depends on the angler, but we recommend a 10 wt
all the way through to a 14 wt fly rod, with 12 wt
being the most common. Use a high quality disc drag
reel with a significant amount of backing. We
recommend Galvan Torque reels with a capacity of
300'. We utilize a weight forward floating line with
a custom tapered leader to a wire bite trace. If you
don't have your own equipment, we can provide quality
rods & reels.
Flies
Although we tie all the flies you will need, feel
free to bring your own patterns as well. We recommend
the Fly H20 Dave Trimble Mako Shark Flies
available from Bass Pro Shops. We
recommend large tube flies, 6-10" tied in red
/ orange. Pink & chartreuse will also
work. Average hook sizes range from 4/0 to
8/0.
What to Wear
As with all our trips, we recommend layering up.
Mother Nature doesn't let us know what she chooses to
wear, so we just bring everything but the kitchen
sink. Sometimes, its just shorts an flip flops, other
times its heavy duty rain gear. Check the weather
reports and give us a call a week before the charter
to get a better idea of the conditions. Always bring
a cap, long sleeve shirt and sunscreen. The sun is
just wicked on the water. Headhunter makes some of
the best sunscreen available. Give em a try,
thats what we use.
